If you’ve been to The Tasting Room at all in the last year you’ve probably noticed the incredible paintings adorning our white shiplap walls. They are the recent and older works of JPM Catering founder Jennifer McCafferty’s Uncle Rod Boston, a Tyler School of Art-trained artist and former art instructor who for two decades has run a successful contracting company, Boston Design & Construction, that specializes in restorations, additions and fine woodwork.
Jennifer spent much of her childhood in Uncle Rod’s studio, which for awhile was on the third floor of the West Philadelphia home they shared, and she still talks about how much she was influenced by those early days and how being around her uncle’s creativity fueled her own.
Now you can have a chance to win one of Uncle Rod’s paintings AND help him and his family through a rough patch — while successfully battling brain cancer, he went into septic shock from an infection and was on life support for six days last month. Thankfully, Uncle Rod is on the road to recovery, but he will be unable to work during a long period of rehabilitation, and bills are mounting.
By donating to Uncle Rod’s fundraiser on Crowdrise, you can earn one or more chances to win one of his paintings via auction. Any amount you can spare will help, and you’ll be helping a wonderful and talented man and family who have helped so many others through work, art and service.
And of course, all of Uncle Rod’s paintings inside The Tasting Room are for sale. Before his recent serious illness he stopped in after a round of chemotherapy to swap in some new still life paintings. Despite everything, he is still creating and still working toward something — a lesson for all of us.
